Several hours later, Emily slowly opened her eyes inside a private hospital room.
Bright afternoon sunlight filtered through the curtains.
The first face she recognized was her husband, David.
He had caught the first flight home after receiving the call.
He gently held her hand.
"You scared me."
Emily whispered,
"Our baby?"
Dr. Rebecca Morgan entered with a reassuring smile.
"The baby is still doing well."
"You've suffered bruising and a mild concussion."
"But your son is fighting."
Emily closed her eyes in relief.
Moments later, Officer Jennifer Lawson quietly entered the room.
"I only have one question."
Emily nodded weakly.
Jennifer spoke gently.
"Did Sophia push you?"
Emily stared at the ceiling for several seconds.
Then tears rolled down her face.
"Yes."
"I trusted her..."
"And she pushed me."
Jennifer nodded.
"I believe you."
She didn't say another word.
She didn't need to.
The surveillance cameras...
And one fearless little girl...
