Season 2 Chapter 8 — Beneath the Silent Lake

The appearance of the black SUV changed everything.
Until now, Ethan believed he had been investigating history.
Now history had begun investigating him.
The Chairman was watching.
Just as Richard once had.
Just as Blackwood once had.
Only this enemy was far more patient.
---
Later that afternoon, Daniel successfully restored part of the damaged cassette.
Only eight additional words could be recovered.
"...beneath the old observatory...
the vault remains unopened."
Everyone looked at each other.
"The observatory?" Lucas asked.
Eleanor nodded immediately.
"I know where that is."
"You do?"
"It belonged to Charles Ashcroft."
"Outside Pasadena."
"It was abandoned nearly twenty years ago."
Ethan stood.
"Then we're going."
---
That evening Ethan, Lucas, Daniel, and Eleanor arrived at the abandoned observatory.
The building had nearly collapsed.
Broken telescopes covered with dust filled the main dome.
Nature had reclaimed most of the property.
But Eleanor walked with certainty.
She stopped beneath the center platform.
"Here."
Lucas pushed aside an old metal cabinet.
Hidden beneath it was a circular steel hatch.
Locked.
Ethan removed the small brass key his father had hidden inside the envelope.
It fit perfectly.
With a heavy metallic sound...
the hatch opened.
A staircase disappeared into darkness.
---
The underground vault was untouched.
Rows of filing cabinets lined the walls.
Old computers.
Boxes.
Photographs.
Everything preserved as though someone had expected to return.
On the far wall stood a massive steel safe.
Instead of a combination lock...
it required five different keys.
Five founders.
Five keys.
Eleanor slowly removed one from around her neck.
Daniel discovered another hidden inside an archive box.
Lucas produced one his father had secretly left him years earlier.
Only three keys.
Two were still missing.
Without them...
the vault could never be opened.
---
As they prepared to leave, Ethan noticed fresh footprints in the dust.
Not theirs.
Someone had entered recently.
Very recently.
Then he found a small envelope resting on the safe.
It had not been there when they entered.
Across the front were eight typed words.
**"You are finally standing exactly where I wanted."**
No signature.
Only one embossed symbol.
The Chairman had reached the vault first.
And somehow...
he knew Ethan would come.
