Chapter 4 — The File Hidden in Ethan's Office

The Man Inside the Wardrobe
## Chapter 4 — The File Hidden in Ethan's Office
Ethan Harrison had spent his entire life believing that his office was the one place where nothing could surprise him.
Behind the glass walls of his private workspace, he controlled everything.
Every business decision.
Every investment.
Every contract.
Every person who worked under him.
His company had grown because Ethan trusted facts more than feelings.
Numbers did not lie.
Documents did not betray you.
At least, that was what he believed.
Until his own office began revealing secrets hidden from him for years.
---
After Lucas's confession, Ethan could no longer look at his marriage the same way.
The words kept repeating in his mind.
"Emily didn't enter your life by accident."
He hated that sentence.
Not because he knew it was false.
Because part of him feared it was true.
For days, Ethan had searched for proof that would explain everything.
He searched old company records.
Private accounts.
Archived emails.
Anything connected to Emily and Lucas before he met them.
But every search created more questions.
Never answers.
Until he found the file.
---
The file was hidden inside a locked drawer in his office.
A drawer Ethan rarely used because it contained older company documents from the early years of his business.
The lock had not been broken.
Nothing appeared stolen.
But inside, behind several financial reports, Ethan found a thin black folder.
There was no company logo.
No label.
Only one word written on the front.
"Harrison."
His name.
Ethan stared at it for several seconds.
A strange feeling moved through him.
Someone had placed it there intentionally.
Someone wanted him to find it.
Slowly, he opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Old messages.
And information that made his hands freeze.
The first photograph showed Emily.
But she looked different.
Younger.
Her hair was shorter.
Her expression was colder.
She was standing outside a building Ethan recognized.
His company's first headquarters.
The date on the back was eight years earlier.
Before they met.
Before their wedding.
Before Sophie.
Ethan looked at the next photograph.
This time, Emily was standing beside Lucas.
Together.
Not romantically.
But close enough to raise questions.
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
Why had both of them been connected to his life before he even knew them?
---
The documents were even more disturbing.
They were reports about Ethan.
His business.
His habits.
His daily schedule.
Information that only someone close to him could know.
One page contained details about his personality.
"Highly loyal. Strong emotional attachment to family. Trusts people once they gain his confidence."
Ethan stared at the sentence.
It did not look like a business report.
It looked like someone was studying him.
Observing him.
Preparing for something.
At the bottom of the page was a handwritten note.
"Approach must appear natural."
Ethan immediately stepped back.
His breathing became heavier.
This was no longer about an affair.
This was something planned.
---
That night, Ethan waited until Sophie was asleep before confronting Emily.
She was sitting in their bedroom, quietly folding clothes.
The image almost broke him.
Because only a few days earlier, this scene would have represented everything he loved.
His wife.
Their home.
Their peaceful life.
Now it felt like a performance.
"Emily."
She looked up.
She immediately saw the folder in his hand.
And her face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"You found it."
Ethan noticed the words.
Not "What is that?"
Not "Where did you get that?"
She said:
"You found it."
Meaning she knew it existed.
"How long were you going to keep this from me?"
Emily looked down.
"I was trying to protect you."
Ethan almost laughed.
"Protect me?"
He placed the folder on the bed.
"Someone was collecting information about me. Someone was planning something. And you think hiding it was protecting me?"
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know how to tell you."
"The truth would have been a good start."
She remained silent.
And Ethan realized something painful.
Emily had spent years protecting a secret.
But she had never protected his trust.
---
"Who was behind this?" Ethan asked.
Emily looked toward the window.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"I don't know everything."
Ethan frowned.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"It's the truth."
She turned toward him.
"I knew someone wanted to get close to you. I knew there was a reason I was introduced to your world."
Ethan froze.
"Introduced?"
Emily closed her eyes.
"I didn't understand at first. I thought it was just a coincidence."
"But it wasn't."
"No."
Her voice became quieter.
"It wasn't."
The room fell silent.
Then Ethan asked the question he had been afraid to ask.
"Did you marry me because of a plan?"
Emily looked at him.
And the pain in her eyes was real.
That was the part Ethan hated most.
Because he could not tell whether she was lying anymore.
"No," she whispered.
"I married you because I fell in love with you."
Ethan looked away.
"But you still came into my life because of someone else's plan."
Emily had no answer.
---
Later that night, Ethan returned to his office.
He opened the folder again.
There was one final document he had missed.
A single page hidden at the bottom.
It contained a name.
A name he recognized immediately.
Someone who had disappeared from his life many years ago.
Someone he thought was gone forever.
At the bottom of the page was one sentence:
"The Harrison family must never discover the truth about what happened twenty years ago."
Ethan stared at the words.
Twenty years ago.
A time before his company.
Before Emily.
Before Lucas.
Before the life he thought he understood.
For the first time, Ethan realized the secret destroying his family did not begin with his wife.
It began long before she ever entered his life.
And someone had spent two decades making sure he never found out.
