Season 2 Chapter 12 — The Agent Who Betrayed America

Three weeks after Richard Harrison's arrest, Ethan believed the nightmare was finally ending.

Blackwood Capital had collapsed.

The investigation continued across several states.

Federal agents were recovering hidden accounts connected to Richard's network.

For the first time in months, Ethan slept through the night.

Until Daniel Reeves called.

"Ethan..."

His voice sounded uneasy.

"We found someone."

Ethan frowned.

"Who?"

"A woman your father met several times before he died."

Silence.

"I thought everyone connected to him was gone."

"So did I."

---

The woman lived alone in a quiet coastal town north of San Diego.

Her name was Margaret Lawson.

Seventy-four years old.

Former investigative journalist.

Retired for nearly two decades.

When Ethan arrived with Daniel, she was already waiting on her porch.

She looked directly at Ethan.

"You have your father's eyes."

Those words froze him.

She had never met him as an adult.

Yet she recognized him instantly.

---

Inside her small home, every wall was covered with books.

Old newspapers.

Boxes filled with handwritten notes.

Margaret carefully opened one weathered folder.

"I promised your father I would only give this to his son."

She slid it across the table.

Ethan slowly opened it.

Inside were photographs.

His father.

Daniel.

Lucas's father.

Another man Ethan didn't recognize.

The four stood together outside an old courthouse.

On the back was written:

"The First Witness."

---

Margaret explained everything.

Twenty-three years earlier, Ethan's father hadn't been investigating only Blackwood Capital.

He had been gathering evidence against an international financial network operating far beyond California.

Richard Harrison wasn't the founder.

He wasn't even the leader.

He was only an American representative.

"There were others," Margaret whispered.

"Much more powerful."

Ethan felt cold.

He had believed Richard was the final enemy.

Now he realized Richard had answered to someone else.

---

Margaret reached beneath the table.

She removed an old cassette recorder.

"I interviewed your father three days before he died."

Daniel looked shocked.

"You still have it?"

She nodded.

"I never played it for anyone."

Ethan carefully inserted the cassette.

His father's voice filled the room.

"If something happens to me...

don't chase Richard.

Richard isn't important.

Find the Archivist."

The recording suddenly ended.

Only one strange title remained.

The Archivist.

Not a name.

A role.

Someone who kept every secret.

Someone who had survived even after Richard's downfall.

---

Margaret looked at Ethan.

"I've spent twenty years waiting for someone brave enough to finish what your father started."

Ethan stared at the recorder.

His father's last investigation had never ended.

It had simply been waiting...

for him.
