Chapter 5 — The Woman Behind Emily's Smile

The Man Inside the Wardrobe
## Chapter 5 — The Woman Behind Emily's Smile
Ethan Harrison had spent the last twenty-four hours trying to convince himself that everything still made sense.
But the harder he looked for answers, the more his entire life seemed like a puzzle built from missing pieces.
The woman he married was no longer simply Emily Harrison.
She was someone with a past he never knew.
A past connected to his company.
A past connected to Lucas.
And now, possibly connected to a secret that began twenty years ago.
For the first time since building his empire, Ethan felt powerless.
Money could solve problems.
Influence could open doors.
But neither could help him understand the person sleeping beside him for almost a decade.
---
Emily noticed the change in him immediately.
Ethan was no longer the man who came home and smiled when Sophie ran toward him.
He was quieter.
More distant.
Every conversation felt carefully measured.
Every question felt like an investigation.
And Emily knew why.
The truth she had spent years hiding was finally reaching the surface.
One evening, after Sophie went to sleep, Emily found Ethan standing alone in the living room.
The city lights reflected through the massive glass windows behind him.
"You hate me now, don't you?" she asked.
Ethan did not turn around.
"I don't know what I feel anymore."
Emily looked down.
"That's worse."
Silence filled the room.
Because they both knew there were no easy answers.
---
"When did you know about me?" Ethan finally asked.
Emily sat down slowly.
"The first time I saw you was eight years ago."
Ethan turned.
"Before we met?"
She nodded.
"I was working as a financial consultant. My company was hired to review several investment projects connected to Harrison Technologies."
Ethan frowned.
"That was never mentioned in your background."
"Because I erased that part."
The honesty shocked him.
"Why?"
Emily looked away.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
She took a deep breath.
"The people who hired me."
Ethan remained silent.
Emily continued.
"When I first started reviewing the company records, I noticed something strange. There were financial movements that didn't make sense. Money was being redirected through different accounts. Someone inside the company was hiding something."
"Who?"
"I didn't know."
She looked at him.
"But then I found information about you."
Ethan felt a cold sensation.
"Information about me?"
Emily nodded.
"Your habits. Your schedule. Your family background. Your weaknesses."
The same words from the hidden file.
Ethan's expression changed.
"You saw that file before."
Emily looked down.
"Yes."
---
Ethan walked away.
For years, he had believed Emily was the person who understood him better than anyone.
Now he wondered if she understood him because she had studied him.
That thought hurt more than he expected.
"Did you approach me because of that information?"
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"At first, yes."
The answer hit him.
Even though he expected it.
Even though part of him already knew.
"What does that mean?"
Emily wiped her face.
"It means someone wanted me close to you."
"Who?"
"I never knew the entire plan."
"But you followed it."
Emily closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The honesty was painful.
"I was supposed to observe you. Learn about you. Report what I discovered."
Ethan stared at her.
"Report to who?"
Emily did not answer.
And Ethan immediately knew.
There was still another secret.
---
"Then why did you stay?"
Emily looked at him.
That question broke something inside her.
"Because somewhere along the way, everything changed."
Her voice became softer.
"I stopped seeing you as a target."
Ethan looked away.
"I fell in love with you."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
Emily shook her head.
"I don't expect you to forgive me."
She stood up.
"But I need you to know something."
"What?"
"The plan failed because I wasn't supposed to love you."
Ethan said nothing.
Emily continued.
"The people who sent me wanted information. They wanted access to your life. They wanted control."
Her voice trembled.
"But when I realized what they were really planning, I tried to stop them."
Ethan remembered Lucas.
The fear in his eyes.
The warning.
The hidden file.
"So Lucas knew?"
Emily nodded.
"Lucas found out before you did."
"How?"
"Because he was investigating the same people."
---
The next morning, Ethan returned to his office and searched deeper into the documents.
He found a connection between Emily's old employer and a private investment group.
A group that had quietly purchased small shares in his company years earlier.
The name appeared repeatedly.
Blackwood Capital.
Ethan recognized it.
Everyone in the business world knew the name.
A powerful private organization known for acquiring companies.
But there was something unusual.
They had never publicly shown interest in Harrison Technologies.
They had operated from the shadows.
Watching.
Waiting.
Ethan continued reading.
Then he found another document.
A photograph.
An old photograph.
His father was standing beside a man Ethan had never seen before.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
Twenty years earlier.
And a handwritten message.
"Your father knew the truth."
Ethan froze.
His father.
The man who died when Ethan was young.
The man who left behind unanswered questions.
The man whose death Ethan always believed was a tragedy.
Suddenly, a terrible possibility appeared.
Maybe his father's death was not the beginning of his family's pain.
Maybe it was the moment everything started.
---
That night, Ethan received a message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
Nothing else.
**"Stop searching for the truth, or you will lose what remains of your family."**
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
A photograph.
It was taken outside his mansion.
A photograph of Sophie.
Taken only hours earlier.
Ethan's blood turned cold.
Someone was watching his daughter.
Someone had been watching his family for years.
And now Ethan finally understood.
Emily's secret was never the biggest danger.
She was only one piece of a much larger game.
And whoever was behind it had just made their first move.
