Chapter 1 — The File No One Was Meant to Read

Three days after Richard Harrison's arrest, silence returned to the Beverly Hills mansion.

For the first time in weeks, no reporters waited outside the gates. No detectives walked through Ethan Harrison's office. The endless phone calls from lawyers, investigators, and journalists had finally slowed.

Yet Ethan couldn't sleep.

Every night, he found himself standing in his father's old study, staring at the black wooden box that had changed everything.

Richard was in federal custody.

Blackwood Capital had collapsed.

Emily had moved into a nearby house so Sophie could still see both parents.

Lucas was recovering from his injuries.

Everything should have been over.

But Ethan couldn't forget the final sentence written on the document hidden inside his father's archive.

"The Harrison family secret was never the only secret."

His father never wasted words.

If he had written that sentence, it meant there was something even bigger still hidden.

Late one evening, Ethan unlocked the black box again.

He carefully removed every document he had already examined.

The photographs.

The financial records.

The handwritten letters.

The newspaper clipping about his father's death.

Nothing new.

As he lifted the velvet lining from the bottom of the box, something caught his attention.

A thin edge of yellowed paper.

Hidden beneath the wooden base.

His pulse quickened.

The compartment was so perfectly concealed that even investigators had overlooked it.

Using a small pocketknife, Ethan gently lifted the false bottom.

Inside rested a single sealed envelope.

Unlike the others, this one had no address.

Only six words were written across the front.

"Burn without reading if found."

Ethan smiled bitterly.

His father should have known better.

After everything he had uncovered, there was no chance he would destroy it unopened.

He carefully broke the old wax seal.

Inside was only one folded page.

No greeting.

No signature.

Only a list.

Twenty-three names.

Some belonged to powerful politicians.

Some to billionaires.

Several were executives Ethan recognized from the financial world.

Then his eyes stopped on one familiar name.

Daniel Reeves.

The retired investigator who had helped him uncover Blackwood.

Another name.

Richard Harrison.

Already in prison.

Another.

Lucas Miller's father.

Then Ethan reached the final name.

He froze.

His own father's name appeared on the list.

Not crossed out.

Not marked as deceased.

Simply listed beside everyone else.

Below the names was one handwritten sentence.

"Only one remains alive."

Ethan's breathing became heavier.

That made no sense.

His father had died twenty years ago.

Richard was imprisoned.

Several people on the list had publicly died years earlier.

Unless...

Unless their deaths had all been staged.

A sudden knock interrupted his thoughts.

Lucas entered quietly.

"I saw your office light."

Ethan handed him the paper without speaking.

Lucas read it once.

Then a second time.

The color disappeared from his face.

"I've seen this handwriting before," Lucas whispered.

"You have?"

Lucas nodded slowly.

"My father received letters exactly like this before he disappeared."

Ethan looked up sharply.

"You told me your father died."

Lucas remained silent.

After several seconds, he answered.

"I said everyone believed he died."

The room became completely still.

For the second time in a month, Ethan realized someone close to him had hidden another enormous truth.

Before either man could speak again, Sophie's voice echoed from upstairs.

"Daddy! Someone left a package at the front door!"

Ethan rushed outside.

A small wooden box sat alone on the front steps.

No delivery company.

No return address.

Inside was an old silver key.

And another handwritten note.

"You're finally reading the file they feared most. Now find the door before they do."
