Season 2 Chapter 5: The Black Ledger

Chapter 5: The Daughter Nobody Knew
The rain continued to pour over Beverly Hills as Detective James Walker sealed Daniel Carter's journal inside an evidence bag.
Michael Brooks watched helplessly.
"That journal belongs to my family now," Walker said.
"No," Michael replied coldly.
"It belongs to Daniel Carter."
Walker nodded.
"For twenty-five years, nobody cared about that."
"But someone does now."
Sarah Mitchell stepped beside Michael.
"Who reopened the case?"
Walker handed her a document.
"The request came from Daniel Carter's legal representative."
Michael immediately noticed the signature.
Emily Carter.
He whispered the name aloud.
"Emily..."
Walker folded the document.
"She's waiting downtown."
"Waiting for who?"
"For you."
---
An hour later.
Federal Building.
Los Angeles.
Michael entered a quiet conference room.
A young woman stood beside the window overlooking the city.
She looked to be around thirty years old.
Dark brown hair.
Calm gray eyes.
Simple navy business suit.
Nothing about her suggested revenge.
Yet everything about her suggested determination.
She slowly turned.
"You must be Michael Brooks."
Michael nodded.
"And you're Daniel Carter's daughter."
She smiled sadly.
"I've waited twenty-five years to hear someone say that."
Michael pulled out a chair.
"My father told everyone Daniel had no family."
Emily looked directly into his eyes.
"George Brooks lied."
"He paid people to erase us."
Michael froze.
"What?"
"My mother was pregnant when my father died."
She placed an old birth certificate on the table.
Father:
Daniel Carter.
Mother:
Rebecca Carter.
Michael quietly examined the document.
It was genuine.
"So George knew?"
Emily nodded.
"He visited my mother after the funeral."
Michael looked up.
"What did he want?"
Emily opened another envelope.
Inside was a check.
Five million dollars.
Signed by George Brooks.
"He offered my mother money."
Michael whispered,
"To stay silent."
Emily nodded.
"My mother refused."
"Three weeks later..."
"...our house burned down."
Michael's heart stopped.
"What?"
Emily looked away.
"My mother survived."
"But every document proving who my father was disappeared."
Michael struggled to breathe.
"My father would never..."
Emily interrupted him.
"I never said George started the fire."
Silence.
"But someone wanted us erased."
Sarah leaned forward.
"Do you know who?"
Emily slowly removed one final photograph.
It showed a younger Rebecca Carter.
Standing beside another woman.
Michael stared.
The second woman looked strangely familiar.
Too familiar.
He suddenly realized why.
She was Eleanor Brooks.
Twenty-five years younger.
Michael looked up in disbelief.
"Eleanor knew your mother?"
Emily nodded.
"They were sisters."
The room became completely silent.
Sarah's eyes widened.
"That's impossible."
Emily calmly shook her head.
"No."
"It was hidden."
"Eleanor Carter changed her last name after marrying into the Brooks family."
Michael felt the room spinning.
His wife had never randomly entered his life.
She hadn't simply been manipulated by Thomas.
She already had a connection to Daniel Carter before meeting him.
Everything suddenly looked different.
Every lie.
Every coincidence.
Every betrayal.
Michael whispered,
"So my marriage..."
Emily finished the sentence.
"...began with a secret."
Before anyone could speak again, Walker's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression immediately changed.
"What?"
Everyone looked at him.
Walker slowly lowered the phone.
"The evidence locker was just broken into."
Sarah stood instantly.
"What was stolen?"
Walker swallowed.
"Daniel Carter's journal."
Michael's blood ran cold.
"But that's impossible."
Walker looked directly at him.
"The security footage shows only one person entering the building."
He paused.
"The person used George Brooks' old federal access card."
Michael stared in disbelief.
"George has been dead for weeks."
Walker nodded.
"I know."
May you like
"That's exactly why this makes no sense."
