Season 2 Chapter 9: The DNA Lie

Chapter 9: The Sister Who Never Knew

The photograph slipped from Emily Carter's trembling hands.

It landed silently on the wooden floor of the abandoned church.

Nobody spoke.

Michael Brooks picked it up again.

The woman in the picture looked almost identical to Emily.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

Only her hairstyle was different.

She looked happy.

Completely unaware that someone had been watching her for years.

Emily whispered,

"That's... my sister?"

Robert Ellis slowly nodded.

"Her name isn't Claire."

"That was only the name George gave her after the adoption."

Sarah Mitchell stepped closer.

"So what's her real name?"

Robert looked exhausted.

"I don't know."

"The adoption agency changed everything."

"New birth certificate."

"New parents."

"New identity."

George wanted Thomas to spend the rest of his life searching for a ghost.

Michael frowned.

"But Thomas eventually found her."

Robert slowly answered,

"No..."

"He found a trail."

"He never confirmed it."

Sarah looked at the surveillance photo again.

"Then why was she following Emily?"

Robert stared at the image.

"Because she had no idea who she really was."

---

Two hours later...

FBI Headquarters.

Los Angeles.

Special Agent Daniel Ross spread dozens of photographs across a conference table.

Every photograph showed the same woman.

Different cities.

Different years.

Different identities.

But always...

The same face.

Agent Ross looked toward Michael.

"We believe this woman has used at least seven different names."

Emily leaned forward.

"Why?"

"We don't think she knew she was hiding."

"We think someone kept moving her."

Sarah frowned.

"Who?"

Ross opened another file.

"The same adoption judge Robert mentioned."

Michael looked surprised.

"The judge is still alive?"

Ross nodded.

"Ninety-one years old."

"He lives in a private nursing facility outside Sacramento."

Emily immediately stood.

"We're going."

---

The following morning...

Sacramento Hills Care Center.

Judge William Harper lay quietly in a hospital bed.

His memory had faded with age.

But when Robert Ellis entered the room...

The old man's eyes suddenly focused.

"Robert..."

Robert nodded.

"It's been a long time."

The judge smiled weakly.

"I always knew this day would come."

Emily carefully stepped closer.

"I'm Rebecca Carter's daughter."

The old judge stared at her.

Then tears slowly filled his eyes.

"You look exactly like your mother."

Emily fought back tears.

"Please..."

"I need to know what happened to my sister."

Judge Harper closed his eyes.

"I tried to save both girls."

Michael asked softly,

"What stopped you?"

The judge whispered,

"Thomas Brooks."

Everyone became silent.

"He found the hospital before sunrise."

"He came looking for the twins."

Emily covered her mouth.

"My God..."

"I only had time to hide one child."

Sarah frowned.

"The other?"

Judge Harper slowly pointed toward Robert.

"George arrived."

"He carried the second baby away himself."

Robert nodded quietly.

"George drove all night."

"He delivered her to a family in Oregon."

Emily's heartbeat quickened.

"Who?"

The old judge shook his head.

"I never learned their names."

George paid in cash.

Destroyed every document.

Then looked me in the eye and said..."

The judge paused.

"...'If Thomas ever finds her... she'll die.'"

The room fell silent.

Suddenly...

The judge grabbed Emily's wrist with surprising strength.

"Listen carefully."

His voice became urgent.

"Your sister doesn't know she's adopted."

"If Thomas reaches her first..."

"...he'll use her against you."

Emily looked terrified.

"How do I find her?"

The judge slowly reached beneath his pillow.

He removed a tiny silver key.

"I kept this..."

"...for twenty-five years."

Robert immediately recognized it.

"The safe deposit key."

Judge Harper nodded.

"George rented a private safety box."

"Everything you need..."

"...is inside."

Before anyone could ask another question...

The room's television suddenly turned on by itself.

Static filled the screen.

Then a live video appeared.

Thomas Brooks.

Smiling.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Hello, Emily."

Everyone froze.

Thomas chuckled.

"I see you've found the judge."

He slowly raised a pistol into view.

Standing beside him...

Bound to a chair...

Was a terrified young woman.

She looked exactly like Emily.

Thomas smiled wider.

"I found your sister first."
