Season 2 Chapter 13: Blood Doesn't Lie

Chapter 13: The Heir Nobody Expected
The photograph slipped from Michael Brooks' fingers.
It landed face-up on the steel chest.
No one spoke.
Rain continued falling over the abandoned Brooks estate.
Sarah Mitchell slowly picked up the photograph.
She studied it carefully.
George Brooks.
William Harrington.
And twelve-year-old Michael.
All three were smiling.
As if they were an ordinary family.
Michael stared at the picture.
"I've never seen this before."
Robert Ellis quietly replied,
"Neither had I."
Emily looked closer.
"Why would Daniel Carter keep this?"
Sarah flipped the photograph over.
Something was written on the back.
In Daniel's handwriting.
"The future was chosen long before he understood."
Michael frowned.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
---
Three hours later...
FBI Headquarters.
The photograph was scanned into the national database.
Facial recognition confirmed William Harrington's identity.
Nothing unusual.
Then a forensic analyst enlarged the background.
A reflection appeared in a nearby window.
Someone else had been standing behind the camera.
The image was blurry.
The analyst enhanced it.
Pixel by pixel.
The room became silent.
It wasn't Thomas.
It wasn't George.
It wasn't Daniel.
It was...
A woman.
Approximately forty years old.
Holding the camera.
Robert suddenly stood.
"I know her."
Everyone turned.
Sarah asked,
"Who is she?"
Robert swallowed.
"Margaret Harrington."
William Harrington's wife."
Michael frowned.
"I thought William never had children."
"He didn't."
Robert nodded.
"But Margaret disappeared after William's death."
Emily looked confused.
"Then why keep hiding?"
Robert answered quietly,
"Because she controlled the inheritance."
---
The FBI searched every government record.
Death certificate.
Marriage records.
Tax history.
Nothing.
Margaret Harrington had vanished eighteen years earlier.
As if she had never existed.
Then Agent Ross rushed into the room.
"We found something."
He projected an old passenger list.
Private flight.
Destination: Switzerland.
Date: eighteen years ago.
Passenger:
Margaret Harrington.
No return flight.
Sarah narrowed her eyes.
"She left the country."
Ross shook his head.
"Officially."
He opened another file.
"A witness reported seeing her in California..."
"...two weeks ago."
Michael looked up.
"Where?"
Ross answered,
"Less than five miles from the Brooks mansion."
Silence.
Someone had been watching them.
Long before Thomas returned.
---
Meanwhile...
At the mountain cabin...
Thomas Brooks packed several files into a leather bag.
The young woman watched him.
"You've lost."
Thomas smiled.
"Not yet."
"The FBI still thinks this is about money."
He looked out the window.
"They still don't understand what Harrington built."
She quietly asked,
"What did he build?"
Thomas looked back.
"A family."
She frowned.
"What?"
"A family that didn't know it belonged to him."
Before she could ask another question...
A black helicopter appeared overhead.
Thomas looked surprised.
He hadn't expected visitors.
The helicopter landed in the clearing.
Three people stepped out.
All dressed in black suits.
No insignias.
No identification.
Only one woman walked toward the cabin.
Elegant.
Silver hair.
Calm expression.
Thomas immediately lowered his head.
"Mrs. Harrington."
The young woman froze.
Margaret Harrington was alive.
Margaret entered the cabin slowly.
She looked at Thomas without emotion.
"You've made too much noise."
Thomas remained silent.
"I only followed William's instructions."
Margaret smiled faintly.
"My husband is dead."
"I write the instructions now."
Thomas finally looked up.
"What do you want?"
Margaret answered calmly.
"Bring me Michael Brooks."
"And end this."
---
Back at FBI Headquarters...
Michael couldn't stop staring at the old photograph.
Something felt wrong.
He enlarged it again.
Then again.
Finally...
He noticed something almost invisible.
William Harrington wasn't looking at the camera.
He was looking at Michael.
Not like a businessman.
Not like a friend.
Like a father watching his son.
Michael's heartbeat quickened.
"No..."
He whispered.
Sarah looked over his shoulder.
"What is it?"
Michael pointed at William's expression.
"I've seen this look before."
Emily frowned.
"What are you saying?"
Michael slowly turned toward Robert Ellis.
Robert's face had already turned pale.
Because he knew exactly what Michael was about to ask.
Michael's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Robert..."
"Tell me the truth."
"Who was my real mother?"
May you like
The room fell completely silent.
