Season 2 Chapter 7: The Woman Who Never Left

Chapter 7: The Voice On The Cassette

Emily Carter dropped to her knees beside Samuel Reed.

"No... Samuel... stay with me!"

Blood spread across the wet grass beneath him.

The bouquet of white lilies lay scattered across the ground.

Within minutes, police sirens echoed through the quiet Beverly Hills neighborhood.

Detective Sarah Mitchell and Michael Brooks arrived just as paramedics covered Samuel's body.

Sarah looked down.

"He didn't make it."

Emily silently nodded.

"He tried to tell me something."

Michael noticed the small cassette tape lying near Samuel's hand.

"What is that?"

Emily carefully picked it up.

"He said it was the only conversation George Brooks never knew he recorded."

Sarah immediately placed it into an evidence bag.

"If this is genuine..."

"...it could change everything."

---

Two hours later...

Los Angeles Police Digital Audio Laboratory.

The old cassette recorder crackled to life.

The tape quality was poor.

Years of age had damaged the recording.

A technician adjusted the sound filters.

Static...

Buzzing...

Then two voices slowly became clear.

The first voice belonged to Thomas Brooks.

There was no doubt.

Michael recognized it immediately.

The second voice...

Nobody recognized.

Thomas spoke first.

"Daniel knows too much."

The unknown man answered calmly.

"Then make sure he never talks."

Michael felt chills run down his spine.

Sarah glanced toward him.

The recording continued.

Thomas sounded nervous.

"If something goes wrong..."

The stranger interrupted him.

"It won't."

A pause.

"George will clean up the mess."

Michael lowered his head.

His father had been manipulated from the very beginning.

Then another sentence emerged through the static.

One that changed everything.

Thomas whispered,

"What about the girl?"

Silence.

The unknown man answered.

"She stays alive."

Michael frowned.

"The girl?"

Emily looked confused.

"I was only five months old."

Sarah slowly shook her head.

"No..."

"I don't think they're talking about you."

Everyone stared at the recorder.

Thomas asked again.

"If George discovers her..."

The stranger laughed softly.

"He already knows."

Michael looked up.

"My father knew another girl existed?"

The tape ended abruptly.

The room fell silent.

---

The audio technician replayed the final thirty seconds.

Something unusual appeared beneath the voices.

A faint background sound.

Church bells.

Sarah immediately paused the recording.

"Enhance that."

Within minutes the laboratory isolated the background noise.

Three slow bell chimes.

Then a train horn.

The technician searched historical sound records.

"I've got it."

He pointed at a map.

"In 2001..."

"Only one church in Los Angeles matched this bell pattern."

Michael stepped closer.

"Where?"

"Saint Gabriel Mission."

Emily quietly whispered,

"My mother used to take me there."

Sarah looked surprised.

"You've been there?"

Emily nodded.

"My mother always refused to explain why."

Michael immediately grabbed his jacket.

"We're going."

---

Thirty minutes later...

Saint Gabriel Mission stood quietly beneath the night sky.

The church had been abandoned for years.

Broken stained-glass windows reflected flashes of lightning.

The old wooden doors creaked open.

Dust covered every pew.

Michael slowly walked toward the altar.

Emily stopped suddenly.

"Wait."

She pointed toward the floor.

Fresh footprints.

Someone had entered recently.

Sarah drew her weapon.

"Police!"

No answer.

The footprints led behind the altar.

There...

Hidden beneath loose wooden boards...

Was a small steel lockbox.

Michael carefully opened it.

Inside lay several yellowed documents.

An old photograph.

And one hospital birth record.

Emily picked it up.

Her face turned pale.

"What is it?"

She slowly handed it to Michael.

Mother:

Rebecca Carter.

Child:

Female.

Status:

Transferred.

New Legal Identity Authorized.

Michael frowned.

"There was another child."

Emily stared at the paper.

"My mother only had me..."

Sarah quietly shook her head.

"No."

"According to this record..."

"...Rebecca Carter gave birth to twin daughters."

Complete silence filled the church.

Emily's hands began to shake.

"I had..."

"...a sister?"

Before anyone could answer...

A slow clap echoed from the darkness behind the altar.

A man's voice followed.

"Congratulations."

"It only took twenty-five years."

Michael spun around.

A shadow stepped into the moonlight.

The stranger smiled calmly.

For the first time...

His face was completely visible.

And Michael recognized him instantly.

It was the same man who had attended George Brooks' funeral.

The man nobody had questioned.

The family's longtime attorney...

May you like

Robert Ellis.
