CHAPTER 6 THE LAST SECRET

Michael Brooks did not remember leaving the room.
He did not remember walking down the hallway.
He did not remember the rain outside becoming louder.
All he remembered was one sentence.
"Thomas Brooks is your father."
The words repeated inside his mind.
Again.
Again.
Again.
His entire life had been built on a lie.
The man he called father was not his biological father.
The man he believed was dead had been alive.
And that man had spent months destroying his family from the shadows.
Detective Sarah Mitchell found Michael standing alone in the living room.
The same room where everything had started.
The torn dress.
The accusation.
The slap.
The beginning of the nightmare.
“You okay?”
Michael laughed quietly.
It was not a happy laugh.
“Do people ever really know their own family?”
Detective Mitchell looked at him.
“Sometimes the people closest to us are the ones who hide the most.”
Michael looked at the security camera above them.
The same camera that exposed the truth.
The same camera his father had trusted.
“Where is George?”
She was silent.
That was enough.
Michael immediately turned.
“Where is he?”
“He went to find Thomas.”
Michael froze.
“Alone?”
“He said this was something he needed to finish.”
Michael grabbed his jacket.
“No.”
Detective Mitchell stopped him.
“Michael.”
He looked back.
For the first time in years, he did not look like an angry son.
He looked like a confused child searching for answers.
“He lied to me my entire life.”
A pause.
“But he was still my father.”
George Brooks stood inside the old private archive room.
The same room where the past had waited for twenty-five years.
The lights were dim.
The shelves were filled with forgotten memories.
He knew Thomas would come.
Because Thomas always wanted an audience.
The door behind him opened.
Slow footsteps entered.
Thomas Brooks appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
“You look exactly the same.”
George turned.
“No.”
Thomas smiled.
“You’re right.”
He looked around the room.
“You look older.”
George said nothing.
Thomas walked closer.
“Twenty-five years, George.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“I wanted you to think that.”
“Why?”
Thomas laughed.
“Because dead people are easier to blame.”
George stared at him.
“You destroyed innocent people.”
Thomas’ expression hardened.
“Innocent?”
He stepped closer.
“You protected yourself.”
“I protected my family.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You protected your reputation.”
The accusation hit harder because George knew there was truth in it.
Twenty-five years ago, he had made a choice.
Not the right choice.
Not the brave choice.
The choice that saved the Brooks name.
And destroyed another family.
“I made mistakes.”
Thomas smiled.
“Finally.”
George looked at him.
“But I never killed Daniel.”
Thomas became silent.
For the first time, the anger disappeared.
Only sadness remained.
“No.”
He whispered.
“You didn’t.”
The archive door opened.
Michael entered.
Both brothers turned.
George’s face changed.
“Michael.”
Michael looked at Thomas.
The man who was his biological father.
A stranger.
A ghost.
A monster.
“I want the truth.”
Thomas smiled.
“You deserve it.”
Michael looked at George.
“Both of you.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Thomas began.
“Daniel Carter discovered the fraud inside Brooks Financial.”
Michael listened.
“Your uncle Thomas created the accounts.”
George closed his eyes.
“I tried to fix it.”
Thomas laughed.
“You tried to hide it.”
George did not deny it.
Thomas continued.
“When Daniel threatened to expose everything, I followed him.”
He looked at Michael.
“I wanted to scare him.”
A pause.
“But things went wrong.”
Michael stared.
“You killed him.”
Thomas looked down.
“Yes.”
The confession finally came.
After twenty-five years.
“I pushed him.”
George whispered:
“Thomas…”
“He fell.”
Thomas’s voice became colder.
“And George helped me cover it up.”
Michael looked at George.
The pain was worse than anger.
Because it was true.
George had not killed Daniel.
But he had protected the person who did.
“I was afraid,” George said.
Michael shook his head.
“You always say you protected people.”
His voice broke.
“But you protected secrets.”
George had no answer.
A sound came from the hallway.
Detective Mitchell entered with two officers.
Thomas looked surprised.
Then smiled.
“I wondered when you would arrive.”
Detective Mitchell raised her weapon.
“Thomas Brooks. You are under arrest.”
Thomas laughed.
“Twenty-five years late.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Twenty-five years exactly.”
She held up a small device.
“The security system recorded everything.”
Thomas’ smile disappeared.
“What?”
Detective Mitchell continued.
“When you entered this mansion, you connected to the cameras.”
She held the device.
“This entire conversation was recorded.”
Thomas looked toward the ceiling.
The security camera.
Again.
The camera had remembered.
Hours later, the Brooks mansion was quiet.
Eleanor sat in the living room.
No longer pretending.
No longer crying.
She admitted everything.
Thomas had contacted her.
He threatened her.
But she also wanted the money.
She wanted the Brooks fortune.
She made a choice.
A terrible one.
Andrew cooperated with investigators.
He explained how Thomas forced him to access the security system.
The conspiracy collapsed piece by piece.
But the biggest damage could not be repaired.
Trust.
That was something money could never buy back.
Three weeks later.
Michael stood outside the mansion.
The place where his entire world had changed.
George walked beside him.
For a while, neither spoke.
Finally, George said:
“I’m sorry.”
Michael looked at him.
“I know.”
Another silence.
“Does that change anything?”
George looked down.
“No.”
Michael nodded.
“Neither does the truth.”
George looked surprised.
Michael continued.
“But it matters.”
The old man looked at his son.
His real son in every way that mattered.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
Michael sighed.
“Everyone in this family was afraid.”
He looked at the mansion.
“Fear is what destroyed us.”
One month later, the Brooks family sold the mansion.
The security cameras were removed.
Every single one.
Except one.
Michael kept the original living-room camera.
Not because he wanted to remember the betrayal.
Because he wanted to remember the lesson.
Years later, when people asked him why he kept an old security camera in his office, he always gave the same answer.
“Because cameras don’t create secrets.”
“They reveal them.”
But Michael never discovered one final truth.
A truth hidden even from Thomas.
A truth hidden inside the original security archive.
A deleted file recovered after the investigation.
A recording from twenty-five years earlier.
The date:
August 14th, 2001.
The night Daniel Carter died.
The video showed Thomas following Daniel.
The argument.
The fall.
Everything.
But at the very end of the recording...
Someone else appeared.
Someone standing in the shadows.
Someone watching.
Someone who had known everything from the beginning.
The camera zoomed in.
The image was unclear.
But the identity was impossible to ignore.
Because the person standing there...
was someone from the Brooks family.
Someone who was never considered a suspect.
Someone who had controlled the entire story from the shadows.
And beneath the recovered file was one final message:
"THE TRUTH HAS ONLY BEEN DELAYED."
