Season 2 Chapter 1: The Recovered Footage

Chapter 1: The Recovered Footage

The Brooks mansion had been sold.

The movers had taken away the grand piano, the antique paintings, and nearly every piece of furniture that had once made the estate feel alive. Only silence remained inside the enormous Beverly Hills property.

Michael Brooks stood alone in the empty living room.

Dust floated through beams of afternoon sunlight where crystal chandeliers had once reflected luxury and power. The walls that had witnessed decades of lies now looked strangely ordinary.

Detective Sarah Mitchell entered carrying a sealed evidence box.

"I think this belongs to you."

Michael looked down.

"The camera?"

She nodded.

"The original living-room security camera."

He accepted the box carefully.

The camera had become more than evidence.

It had become the reason his entire life had fallen apart.

George Brooks had always said the same thing.

"Cameras don't create secrets."

"They reveal them."

Michael smiled bitterly.

His father had been right.

The detective placed another envelope beside the box.

"There was something else."

Michael frowned.

"I thought the investigation was over."

"It is."

She hesitated.

"But our digital forensics team recovered a damaged file from the original hard drive."

His heartbeat quickened.

"The deleted recording?"

"Not exactly."

She slid the envelope across the table.

"It wasn't part of the investigation because the file wasn't related to Thomas."

Michael opened it.

Inside was a USB drive marked with faded handwriting.

ARCHIVE 14A

RECOVERY STATUS: PARTIAL

DATE: AUGUST 14, 2001

Michael looked up.

"The night Daniel Carter died."

Sarah nodded.

"Our technicians almost missed it."

"They said someone tried to erase this file years before the recent attacks."

Michael stared at the drive.

"So someone wanted this hidden long before Thomas came back."

"Exactly."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"And I don't think Thomas was the one who deleted it."

Those words settled heavily between them.

If Thomas hadn't erased the recording...

Who had?

Later that evening, Michael carried the camera and the USB drive into his downtown office.

The building was almost empty.

Only the soft hum of the city echoed through the windows.

He connected the recovered drive to his computer.

A warning appeared.

FILE CORRUPTED

PARTIAL VIDEO AVAILABLE

He clicked PLAY.

Static covered the screen.

Then an image slowly appeared.

The timestamp read:

August 14, 2001

11:42 PM

The picture was grainy, but recognizable.

The old Brooks mansion.

The rear garden.

Daniel Carter walked quickly across the lawn, looking over his shoulder as if someone was following him.

A few seconds later...

Thomas Brooks entered the frame.

Exactly as Michael expected.

They argued.

The audio crackled with interference.

Only fragments survived.

"...you promised..."

"...they'll lose everything..."

"...I won't let you..."

Then the image shook violently.

Daniel stumbled backward.

Thomas reached toward him.

The recording froze.

Michael leaned closer.

"No..."

The screen remained frozen for several seconds before recovering.

Thomas was now standing alone.

Breathing heavily.

Looking toward the lake.

Michael closed his eyes.

The confession had always been there.

Then something unexpected happened.

A shadow moved across the far corner of the screen.

At first Michael assumed it was a tree branch.

But the figure stepped forward.

Someone had been watching.

The person stood partially hidden behind a stone statue.

Their face was impossible to identify.

Only the outline was visible.

Tall.

Wearing a long dark coat.

Completely motionless.

Michael replayed the scene three times.

The mysterious figure never approached Thomas.

Never tried to help Daniel.

Never ran away.

They simply watched.

As if they had expected everything to happen.

Then the video ended.

Michael sat frozen.

A second witness.

Unknown.

Silent.

Hidden for twenty-five years.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

It was Detective Mitchell.

"Michael."

"You watched it, didn't you?"

"Yes."

She spoke quietly.

"Our lab enhanced the final frame."

Michael stood.

"What did you find?"

There was a long pause.

Then she answered.

"The person wasn't standing outside by accident."

Another pause.

"They were carrying a Brooks estate master key."

Michael felt the blood drain from his face.

Only members of the Brooks family had ever possessed those keys.

Which meant one terrifying possibility.

Someone else from the Brooks family had witnessed Daniel Carter's death...

May you like

And had remained silent for twenty-five years.
