Season 2 Chapter 11: The Auction

Chapter 11: Beneath The Oak Tree
The FBI helicopter circled above the abandoned Brooks estate.
Its spotlight swept across the massive property where Brooks Financial had first begun more than thirty years earlier.
Michael Brooks stepped out of the armored SUV.
Rain soaked the old grounds.
The mansion had long been demolished.
Only cracked stone foundations remained.
But one thing still stood.
The enormous oak tree from Daniel Carter's photograph.
Emily Carter stared upward.
"So this is where my father hid everything."
Robert Ellis quietly nodded.
"George refused to cut this tree down."
"I never understood why."
Sarah Mitchell signaled the FBI excavation team.
"Start digging."
Within minutes...
Ground-penetrating radar scanned the soil.
An agent looked toward Sarah.
"We found something."
Eight feet beneath the tree.
A large steel object.
The excavation began immediately.
Michael watched every shovel of dirt disappear.
Finally...
Metal appeared beneath the mud.
A heavy steel chest.
Two agents carefully lifted it from the ground.
Its surface was badly rusted.
Yet the lock remained intact.
Emily recognized it instantly.
"The key..."
She removed the small silver key from her pocket.
Her hands trembled.
She inserted it into the lock.
Click.
The chest slowly opened.
Inside were dozens of waterproof document folders.
Original accounting books.
Secret banking ledgers.
Audio tapes.
Photographs.
Every document Daniel Carter had collected before his death.
Sarah carefully lifted the first folder.
Her eyes widened.
"My God..."
Michael looked over her shoulder.
The documents contained signatures.
Illegal offshore accounts.
Fake investment companies.
Bribery payments.
Millions of dollars hidden through shell corporations.
And one signature appeared again and again.
Thomas Brooks.
Emily whispered,
"My father was telling the truth."
Robert slowly closed his eyes.
"Twenty-five years..."
"He protected this evidence."
Suddenly...
An FBI forensic accountant stepped forward.
"Wait."
He pointed toward another signature.
Everyone leaned closer.
The signature wasn't Thomas's.
Nor George's.
It belonged to someone else.
Chairman William Harrington.
Michael frowned.
"I've never heard that name."
Robert's face lost all color.
"I have."
Sarah looked at him.
"Who is he?"
Robert swallowed.
"The man who secretly financed Brooks Financial before George and Thomas became wealthy."
Michael looked shocked.
"So Thomas wasn't the mastermind."
Robert quietly answered,
"No."
"He worked for someone."
Silence swept across the excavation site.
Every assumption they had made suddenly collapsed.
Thomas wasn't the man at the top.
He had only been following orders.
Before anyone could speak again...
An FBI agent shouted from the edge of the property.
"We've got movement!"
Everyone turned.
A black SUV burst through the old estate gates at full speed.
Gunfire erupted.
Bullets shattered the rain-soaked silence.
Agents immediately returned fire.
Michael grabbed Emily and pulled her behind the steel chest.
Sarah fired toward the vehicle.
The SUV crashed through the excavation fence.
Then suddenly...
It exploded into flames.
Everyone waited.
No one exited.
FBI agents cautiously approached.
The driver's door slowly opened.
Inside...
Only one man remained.
Dead.
A gunshot wound to the head.
Michael frowned.
"Who is he?"
An agent searched the body.
He found a fake FBI identification card.
A burner phone.
And one folded photograph.
Sarah unfolded it.
It showed Michael...
Standing beside Emily...
Only thirty minutes earlier at the bank.
Someone had been watching them.
On the back of the photograph...
A handwritten message appeared.
STOP DIGGING.
YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.
Michael's heartbeat quickened.
He looked back toward the steel chest.
"If this isn't what Thomas wanted..."
"...then what was?"
At that exact moment...
Emily noticed another envelope hidden beneath the documents.
Unlike every other folder...
It was sealed with red wax.
Across the front...
Daniel Carter had written only one sentence.
Do Not Open Until You Learn Who William Harrington Really Is.
The wind suddenly grew stronger.
Robert Ellis stared at the envelope...
His face filled with terror.
May you like
Because he already knew the answer.
