CHAPTER 5 THE MASTERMIND

The voice came from upstairs.

“Hello, George.”

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound inside the mansion was the heavy rain hitting the windows.

Michael felt every muscle in his body tighten.

Someone was inside.

Someone who knew George.

Someone who had been controlling everything.

Detective Sarah Mitchell immediately raised her weapon.

“Everyone stay here.”

She looked toward the staircase.

“Do not move.”

The detective moved slowly through the darkness.

Michael followed.

“Michael, no.”

But he ignored her.

Not because he was brave.

Because after twenty-five years of living with unanswered questions, he needed the truth.

They reached the second floor.

The hallway lights flickered.

The mansion looked different at night.

The expensive paintings.

The luxury furniture.

The perfect design.

Everything suddenly felt like a stage.

A place built to hide something.

Detective Mitchell searched each room.

Empty.

Bedroom.

Empty.

Guest room.

Empty.

Office.

Empty.

Then they reached the end of the hallway.

A door stood open.

George stopped.

Michael noticed.

“You know this room?”

George slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

George looked at the dark doorway.

“The room where everything started.”

Nobody liked the answer.

Detective Mitchell entered first.

The room was small.

Almost forgotten.

Unlike the rest of the mansion, this room had no luxury.

No decorations.

Only old boxes.

Old photographs.

Old memories.

On the wall was a single picture.

A family photograph.

George.

A woman.

And another man.

A younger version of George.

But not alone.

Michael stepped closer.

His eyes widened.

Because the man in the photograph was the same man from the old picture.

Daniel Carter.

But there was something else.

Written beneath the photograph:

The Brooks Brothers — 1998

Michael turned.

“You said you didn’t have a brother.”

George remained silent.

Detective Mitchell looked at him.

“Mr. Brooks.”

George finally spoke.

“My brother’s name was Thomas.”

The room became silent.

“Why did you hide him?”

George looked at the photograph.

“Because Thomas was the reason Daniel Carter died.”

Twenty-five years earlier.

Before Brooks Financial became a billion-dollar empire.

Before the mansion.

Before the fame.

George Brooks and his younger brother Thomas were partners.

George was the businessman.

Thomas was the genius.

Together, they built the company.

But they were different men.

George believed in control.

Thomas believed in taking risks.

And eventually, those differences became dangerous.

Daniel Carter was their financial auditor.

A man who discovered something he was never supposed to see.

Millions of dollars had disappeared.

Money moved through hidden accounts.

Contracts were manipulated.

Investors were being deceived.

Daniel confronted Thomas.

And Thomas panicked.

“He wanted to expose him,” George said quietly.

Michael stared.

“So Thomas killed him?”

George looked away.

“No.”

Everyone waited.

“Thomas caused the accident.”

The words felt heavier than an admission.

“He followed Daniel that night.”

George continued.

“They argued near the lake behind the old property.”

“What happened?”

George closed his eyes.

“Daniel fell.”

Michael whispered:

“And Thomas let him die.”

George nodded.

“Yes.”

Nobody spoke.

“But why hide it?”

Michael’s voice was filled with anger.

“Why protect him?”

George looked at his son.

“Because Thomas was my brother.”

The answer disappointed Michael.

Not because it was complicated.

Because it was simple.

Family.

The same excuse people used to protect monsters.

A noise interrupted them.

Detective Mitchell turned.

The room’s old computer suddenly powered on.

Nobody had touched it.

The screen displayed a message.

WELCOME BACK, GEORGE.

Then a video began playing.

A man appeared.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across his face.

Michael immediately recognized him.

The same man from the voice.

The same man controlling everything.

George whispered:

“Thomas.”

The man smiled.

“Hello, brother.”

Michael stepped closer.

“You’re alive.”

Thomas laughed softly.

“Everyone always believed I died.”

The video continued.

“But nobody ever asked why.”

George stared at the screen.

“You sent Eleanor.”

Thomas smiled.

“She was easy.”

Eleanor looked down.

Her face collapsed.

Michael turned toward her.

“You knew him?”

Eleanor started crying.

“I met him six months ago.”

Michael looked shocked.

“Six months?”

Thomas continued through the video.

“Eleanor wanted money.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No…”

Thomas ignored her.

“She wanted a different life.”

Michael looked at his wife.

“Is that true?”

Eleanor couldn’t answer.

Thomas smiled.

“Everyone has a price, Michael.”

The screen changed.

A bank record appeared.

A transfer.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

Sent to Eleanor.

Michael closed his eyes.

The betrayal hurt more than anger.

Thomas continued.

“But Eleanor was never the important piece.”

George looked at the screen.

“Then who?”

Thomas smiled.

“The person who helped me enter this house.”

Everyone froze.

Detective Mitchell looked around.

“Who?”

Thomas laughed.

“You really don’t see it?”

The video stopped.

A message appeared.

LOOK BEHIND YOU.

Nobody moved.

Slowly...

Michael turned.

Behind them stood Andrew.

His face was pale.

In his hand was a small device.

A security override controller.

Detective Mitchell immediately pointed her weapon.

“Drop it.”

Andrew looked terrified.

“I can explain.”

Michael stared.

“Andrew?”

His cousin lowered his eyes.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

George looked heartbroken.

“Why?”

Andrew swallowed.

“Because Thomas threatened my family.”

The room went silent.

Thomas’ voice came from the computer again.

“Excellent.”

Everyone looked at the screen.

“I knew Andrew would break.”

Michael stepped toward him.

“You helped him?”

Andrew shook his head.

“I only gave him access.”

“To what?”

Andrew looked at George.

Then whispered:

“To the security system.”

Michael felt cold.

The entire plan.

The deleted footage.

The fake accusation.

The missing recordings.

All of it.

Someone inside the family had helped.

Thomas continued:

“But you still haven’t discovered the biggest secret.”

The screen changed again.

A document appeared.

A birth certificate.

Michael looked closer.

His face slowly changed.

Because the name on the document was:

Thomas Brooks — Father of Michael Brooks

Nobody spoke.

Michael stared.

“No…”

George looked away.

And that was when Michael understood.

The secret was not just about Daniel Carter.

It was about him.

“Dad?”

George could not answer.

Michael’s voice shook.

“Is Thomas my father?”

The mansion became completely silent.

Then George finally said:

“Yes.”

Michael stepped back.

The truth destroyed everything he believed about his life.

George continued:

“But I raised you.”

Michael looked at him.

“You lied to me my entire life.”

George’s eyes filled with regret.

“I protected you.”

A slow clap came from the computer speakers.

Thomas laughed.

“Beautiful.”

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared:

THE FINAL RECORDING WILL SHOW WHO MICHAEL BROOKS REALLY IS.
