CHAPTER 2 THE HIDDEN OPERATOR

The Brooks mansion had never felt so quiet.
Not peaceful.
Not elegant.
Quiet in the way a courtroom became silent before a verdict.
Everyone stood frozen around the security monitor, staring at the same words displayed on the screen.
REMOTE DELETION COMPLETED
Source:
MICHAEL BROOKS — PRIVATE STUDY
Michael stared at the message as if looking at a language he did not understand.
“No.”
His voice was low.
“No, that’s impossible.”
Andrew looked uncomfortable.
“I only read what the system shows.”
Michael stepped closer.
“You’re telling me someone used my study to delete the footage?”
Andrew nodded slowly.
“That’s what the record says.”
The room changed.
Minutes earlier, everyone had been united by one belief.
George Brooks was guilty.
Now that certainty had cracked.
And when certainty disappeared, suspicion entered.
Michael looked around.
His relatives were no longer looking at George.
They were looking at him.
His own family.
The people who had watched him grow up.
The people who knew every weakness he had.
“You all think I did this?”
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than an accusation.
Eleanor slowly moved toward the sofa.
“I don’t understand.”
Her voice sounded fragile.
“How could Michael delete the recording if he was outside?”
Michael turned toward her.
The question was innocent.
But something about it bothered him.
“You’re very interested in proving where I was.”
Eleanor blinked.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you seem more concerned about me than the person who attacked you.”
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But George noticed.
The old man had spent his entire life studying people.
Business negotiations.
Political conversations.
Family arguments.
He knew that the smallest movement could reveal the biggest truth.
“Enough,” George said.
Everyone looked at him.
George walked slowly toward the security screen.
His cheek was still red from Michael’s hand.
But his voice remained calm.
“The person who deleted the footage wanted us to find this.”
Andrew frowned.
“What?”
George pointed at the message.
“They wanted Michael’s name attached to the deletion.”
Michael looked at his father.
“You think someone framed me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
George looked around the room.
“Because someone knew exactly how this family would react.”
Nobody spoke.
The answer was uncomfortable.
Because everyone knew it was true.
The Brooks family had always been predictable.
A threat appeared.
George took control.
Someone was hurt.
Michael reacted emotionally.
A scandal appeared.
The lawyers arrived.
Someone had studied them.
Someone had planned this.
Andrew opened another security window.
“I can check the access logs.”
He typed rapidly.
The system displayed hundreds of entries.
“Most activity is normal.”
“Keep going,” George said.
Andrew continued scrolling.
Then suddenly he stopped.
His face changed.
“What?”
Michael stepped closer.
Andrew pointed.
“There.”
A hidden command.
Not from the main security system.
A secondary administrator access.
Michael frowned.
“What is that?”
George looked at Andrew.
“Who has administrator privileges?”
Andrew hesitated.
“Only five people.”
“Names.”
Andrew looked uncomfortable.
“George Brooks.”
He paused.
“Michael Brooks.”
“The estate manager.”
“The family attorney.”
“And…”
Everyone noticed the hesitation.
“And who?”
Andrew swallowed.
“Eleanor Brooks.”
The room went completely silent.
Eleanor looked shocked.
“Me?”
Andrew nodded.
“You were added six months ago.”
Michael turned slowly.
“Why would you have access?”
Eleanor looked at George.
Then away.
“I don’t know.”
George’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
“You asked for access.”
Everyone looked at her.
Michael’s expression hardened.
“You gave her access?”
George did not answer.
That was enough.
Michael stepped back.
The betrayal was almost visible.
His father had trusted Eleanor with something he had never trusted Michael with.
“Why?”
George looked tired.
“Because I believed she was family.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
But this time nobody rushed to comfort her.
A sound suddenly came from the hallway.
A soft electronic beep.
Everyone turned.
The security system had received another notification.
Andrew opened it.
His face became pale.
“What now?”
He looked at the screen.
“The system detected an unauthorized entry.”
Michael looked toward the hallway.
“When?”
Andrew checked.
“Three minutes ago.”
Everyone froze.
“But nobody entered.”
Andrew shook his head.
“The system says someone did.”
George looked toward the dark corridor.
“Where?”
Andrew typed.
Then answered quietly:
“The private archive room.”
Michael frowned.
The archive room.
A place almost nobody knew existed.
Hidden behind the library.
A room George used to store old company documents.
Family records.
Personal files.
Secrets.
Michael looked at his father.
“What’s in there?”
George did not answer immediately.
And that silence told Michael everything.
“There’s something you don’t want us to find.”
George looked at him.
“There are many things you don’t know about this family.”
The group slowly moved toward the library.
The mansion seemed different now.
Every hallway felt like it was hiding something.
Every painting seemed like it was watching them.
Andrew entered the security code.
The hidden door behind the bookshelf opened.
Inside was darkness.
The archive room smelled of old paper and dust.
Files filled the shelves.
Documents from decades ago.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Personal records.
Michael walked inside.
Then stopped.
On the center table was a single envelope.
His name was written on it.
MICHAEL BROOKS
Nobody spoke.
Michael slowly picked it up.
The envelope was old.
Yellowed.
Like it had been waiting there for years.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of his father.
Twenty-five years younger.
Standing beside another man.
A man Michael had never seen before.
On the back of the photograph was one sentence.
Written by hand.
"Your father knows why he died."
Michael looked up.
“Who is this?”
George saw the picture.
And for the first time that day...
the fear on his face was real.
Because George Brooks recognized the man.
And he knew the past had finally returned.
