Season 2 Chapter 14: The Shadow Behind The Camera

Chapter 14: The Woman Who Changed Everything

The room fell into complete silence.

Michael Brooks looked directly at Robert Ellis.

"Who was my real mother?"

Robert closed his eyes.

For years, he had prepared for this question.

He had only hoped it would never be asked.

Emily stood beside Michael, barely breathing.

Sarah Mitchell quietly switched on her voice recorder.

Robert finally spoke.

"Your mother wasn't a Brooks."

Michael waited.

"She wasn't a Harrington either."

Michael frowned.

"Then who was she?"

Robert reached into his briefcase.

From a hidden compartment, he removed an old leather folder.

Its edges were worn with age.

Across the front, a single name had been written.

ELIZABETH MORGAN

Michael had never heard it before.

Robert carefully opened the file.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A beautiful young woman with chestnut hair smiled warmly at the camera.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-five.

Michael stared at her.

Something felt strangely familiar.

Her eyes.

He had seen those eyes every morning in the mirror.

"She..."

"...looks like me."

Robert nodded.

"She was your mother."

Michael slowly sat down.

Everything around him faded into silence.

Emily gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"When did she die?"

Robert swallowed.

"She didn't."

Michael looked up.

"What?"

Sarah frowned.

"She's alive?"

Robert answered quietly.

"As far as I know..."

"...yes."

Nobody spoke.

Michael's heartbeat echoed in his ears.

"My mother is alive?"

Robert nodded.

"But she disappeared thirty years ago."

---

Robert slowly began telling the story.

Thirty-one years earlier...

Elizabeth Morgan had worked as a financial investigator for the federal government.

She wasn't investigating Brooks Financial.

She was investigating William Harrington.

Unlike everyone else...

Elizabeth couldn't be bribed.

She followed every trail.

Every hidden account.

Every shell company.

Eventually...

She discovered Harrington's entire financial empire.

And one name kept appearing beside his.

Thomas Brooks.

Robert sighed.

"They met secretly dozens of times."

Michael whispered,

"So my mother knew Thomas."

"Yes."

"But she never trusted him."

Robert opened another page.

Inside was a newspaper clipping.

FEDERAL INVESTIGATOR MISSING

No body had ever been found.

Sarah immediately recognized the article.

"I remember studying this case in the academy."

"They believed organized crime was involved."

Robert quietly nodded.

"They were wrong."

Michael's voice shook.

"What really happened?"

Robert looked directly into his eyes.

"Elizabeth disappeared the same night she gave birth to you."

Michael froze.

"The same night?"

"Yes."

George Brooks hid you before Harrington's people arrived."

Emily covered her mouth.

"So George saved him."

Robert nodded.

"For the first and only time..."

"George chose a child over the empire."

---

Sarah suddenly interrupted.

"Wait."

She quickly typed Elizabeth Morgan's name into the FBI database.

Hundreds of classified files appeared.

Her security clearance blocked almost every page.

Then...

One document unexpectedly opened.

STATUS:

ACTIVE.

Sarah's face lost all color.

"Impossible..."

Michael looked at her.

"What?"

Sarah slowly turned the monitor toward everyone.

The federal database officially listed Elizabeth Morgan as...

Active Witness Protection Program

Not deceased.

Not missing.

Alive.

Michael could barely breathe.

"My mother..."

"...has been alive this entire time."

Suddenly...

Every computer inside FBI Headquarters flashed.

A secure incoming transmission appeared.

AUTHORIZED BY U.S. MARSHALS SERVICE.

The room became silent.

Sarah accepted the transmission.

A woman's face appeared on the screen.

Elegant.

Older now.

But unmistakably the same woman from the photograph.

Elizabeth Morgan.

For several seconds...

Neither she nor Michael spoke.

Tears slowly formed in Elizabeth's eyes.

She whispered only one sentence.

"Michael..."

"I'm so sorry."

Michael felt his entire world stop.

Before he could answer...

Another voice interrupted the call.

Cold.

Calm.

Dangerously familiar.

Thomas Brooks stepped into the camera frame behind Elizabeth.

Holding a pistol against her head.

He smiled.

"Family reunions..."

"...never last long."

May you like

The screen instantly went black.
