Season 2 Chapter 8: The Secret Basement

Chapter 8: The Attorney's Twenty-Five-Year Lie

The abandoned church fell silent.

No one moved.

Robert Ellis calmly stepped out from the shadows, dressed in the same tailored black suit he had worn at George Brooks' funeral.

His expression remained perfectly composed.

Michael Brooks stared at him in disbelief.

"You..."

Robert smiled faintly.

"I wondered how long it would take before someone found this place."

Detective Sarah Mitchell immediately drew her weapon.

"Don't move."

Robert slowly raised both hands.

"I have no intention of running."

Sarah narrowed her eyes.

"You've been manipulating this investigation from the beginning."

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"I've been protecting it."

Michael stepped forward.

"You were George's attorney for thirty years."

"Yes."

"You knew about Daniel Carter."

"Yes."

"You knew Thomas was alive."

Robert nodded again.

"Yes."

Michael's fists tightened.

"And you never told anyone?"

Robert looked directly into his eyes.

"Because George made me promise."

Silence filled the old church.

Michael laughed bitterly.

"Another promise."

"Another lie."

Robert slowly walked toward the altar.

"George wasn't trying to protect himself anymore."

"He was protecting someone else."

Emily Carter interrupted.

"My mother?"

Robert turned toward her.

"No."

"Your sister."

Emily's breathing stopped.

"You know where she is?"

Robert sighed.

"I knew."

Michael frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Robert removed an old leather folder from inside his coat.

"This was George's final instruction."

"If anything happened to him..."

"...I was to give this to Michael."

He handed over the folder.

Michael slowly opened it.

Inside were dozens of legal documents.

Adoption records.

Medical files.

Bank transfers.

Old photographs.

And finally...

One sealed envelope.

Across the front George had written by hand:

**For Michael.

Only after Robert tells you the truth.**

Michael opened it.

George's familiar handwriting covered the first page.

Michael...

If you're reading this, then Robert finally had no choice.

I lied to you.

But not for the reasons you think.

Michael's hands trembled.

He continued reading.

Rebecca Carter gave birth to twin daughters.

Only one remained with her.

The second child was taken before sunrise.

Emily whispered,

"My sister..."

George's letter continued.

Thomas wanted both children dead.

Daniel Carter had copied financial records before he died.

He hid those records where only his children could eventually inherit them.

Michael frowned.

"What records?"

Robert quietly answered,

"The original evidence proving Brooks Financial's fraud."

Sarah looked shocked.

"So Thomas wasn't searching for revenge..."

Robert nodded.

"He was searching for the evidence."

Emily looked back at George's letter.

"My sister..."

Robert slowly lowered his head.

"George secretly arranged for her adoption."

Michael looked up.

"He saved her."

"Yes."

"But only three people ever knew her new identity."

"George."

"Myself."

"And..."

Robert stopped speaking.

Sarah immediately noticed.

"And who?"

Robert closed his eyes.

"The adoption judge."

Michael stepped closer.

"So where is she now?"

Robert answered softly.

"I don't know."

Michael stared.

"You don't know?"

"I destroyed every record after George's request."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"So my sister could still be alive..."

Robert nodded.

"Somewhere."

"But under another name."

At that exact moment...

Sarah's phone vibrated.

She answered.

After only ten seconds...

Her expression completely changed.

"What happened?"

The officer on the other end spoke rapidly.

Sarah slowly lowered the phone.

"The FBI just searched Thomas Brooks' hideout."

Michael asked,

"Did they catch him?"

"No."

"They found it empty."

She hesitated.

"But they found one thing."

"What?"

Sarah looked directly at Emily.

"Thousands of surveillance photographs."

"Of you."

Emily froze.

"Me?"

Sarah nodded.

"They've been taken over the last twenty years."

Michael felt a chill run down his spine.

"Thomas has been watching Daniel Carter's daughter..."

"...for decades."

Sarah swallowed.

"And that's not the worst part."

She showed them a photograph sent by the FBI.

It had been taken only three days earlier.

Emily stood outside a bookstore.

Across the street...

A woman wearing sunglasses was secretly watching her.

Sarah zoomed in.

Robert Ellis turned pale.

Michael immediately noticed.

"You know her."

Robert whispered one name.

"Claire..."

Emily looked confused.

"Who's Claire?"

Robert slowly closed his eyes.

"The little girl George hid twenty-five years ago..."

May you like

"...your twin sister."
